ATSF Railway eastbound freight train at Magunden
Three miles southeast of Kern Junction is the junction with the Arvin Branch at Magunden. The Southern Pacific and Santa Fe alternated switching of the Arvin Branch. The SP ran trains on even years and the ATSF on the odd years. You can see the branch connection on the left side of the picture. The highway on the left is the old US 466 which was the main highway through Tehachapi. It was quite a busy highway until the completion of the 58 freeway. It is now the Edison Highway.
Two observation cars are tacked onto the rear of this heavy train.
