I was headed east on another long cross country trip. To avoid the unpredictable weather further north I decided to follow the Sunset Route to San Antonio. It was getting late in the day when I caught train APLAA (Extra 8635 West) crosses the Salt Creek trestle about a mile east of Ferrum on November 29, 1977. After the train went by, I noticed a train coming down the Eagle Mountain Railroad. I immediately reversed course and went to the west end of the siding at Ferrum. Ferrum is 200 feet below sea level and is at milepost 639.
