Colorado & Southern’s Globeville Branch snaked through Denver to serve the historic Globe Smelter and the city’s extensive stock yards, both of which in January, 1959, still provided enough traffic to call out a daily switch run with caboose. The 629 is a 1906 product of Alco’s Brooks works, one of a handful of B-4R 2-8-0s that C&S will keep busy for a few more months. And one of them, the 641, will make the last revenue steam trip on a Class-1 American railroad, running on the isolated Leadville-Climax in October, 1962.
