The cable car was invented (by Andrew Smith Hallidie, patented January 17, 1871) to tackle the daunting hills of San Francisco, and the technology quickly spread across the country. I didn't last very long in most cities because of the superiority of the later electric trolley systems. However, in San Francisco (and Seattle), those same hills were too much for the new streetcars, and the technology persisted much longer. This one is the California Street car line -- one of two remaining car lines (both in San Francisco)
